REUTERS/Vassilis Triandafyllou/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 16 (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on maritime companies and vessels for shipping oil sold above the G7's price cap, as Washington seeks to close loopholes in the mechanism designed to punish Moscow for its war in Ukraine. It said the vessels used U.S.-person services while transporting the Russian-origin crude oil. The cap bans Western companies from providing maritime services, including insurance, finance and shipping, for Russian seaborne oil exports sold above $60 a barrel, while seeking to keep oil flowing to markets. “Shipping companies and vessels participating in the Russian oil trade while using Price Cap Coalition service providers should fully understand that we will hold them accountable for compliance,” Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said in the statement.

The Liberian-flagged oil tanker Ice Energy transfers crude oil from the Iranian-flagged oil tanker Lana (former Pegas), off the shore of Karystos, on the Island of Evia, Greece, May 26, 2022. The United States has sought to limit Iran's oil exports since Donald Trump exited a 2015 nuclear accord in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions aimed at curbing revenues to Iran's government. SVB International, a consultant, estimates Iran's oil production increased in August to 3.15 million barrels per day (bpd), the highest since 2018, with crude oil and condensate exports at just under 2 million bpd. Kpler, a provider of flows data, expects August crude exports to average about 1.2 million bpd, down from a 2018 high of 1.54 million bpd reached in May. Iran's oil minister was quoted by state media as saying crude output will reach 3.4 million bpd by the end of September.

Efforts to extinguish the wildfires continue with interventions by land and air on the third day in Alexandroupolis, Greece on August 21, 2023. Major wildfires were burning in Greece and in Spain's Canary Islands on Monday, with hot, dry and windy conditions hampering the efforts of hundreds of firefighters battling the blazes. In Greece, authorities said the body of a man was recovered from a sheep-pen in an area in the central Viotia region under evacuation as a wildfire approached. Two firefighters were being treated in a hospital for injuries sustained in a separate fire in the northern Kavala region, the fire department said. Opinion: The Donald Trump and Hunter Biden surprises

So it was remarkable Wednesday when the deal for Hunter Biden to plead guilty to two misdemeanors for his failure to pay taxes on time fell apart in a federal courtroom after the judge raised questions about it. Special counsel Jack Smith unexpectedly added a major allegation to the indictment charging former President Donald Trump with mishandling classified documents. Opinion: Vacations as we know it are over

On the contrary, the extreme weather conditions across southern Europe this summer are a wake-up call — a reminder that not even our vacations are insulated from the growing consequences of global heating. Even northern Europe would see a tripling of extreme heat events, which could be expected once every five years. Climate breakdown is set to become all-pervasive and affect every aspect of our lives and livelihoods, and already extreme weather can happen pretty much anywhere. This can’t go on, nor should it, both for the peace of mind of holiday-makers increasingly worried about growing extreme weather, and for the good of the planet. Holidays abroad need to be decoupled from flying, which means – as far as Europe is concerned – train, car or coach.

The crackling flames have left charred forests, drawing in thousands of firefighters to stop their hungry march. The hundreds of wildfires that raged in recent days across southern Europe and northern Africa forced the evacuations of thousands of people. In Greece, blazes have ravaged the forest areas of the mainland and islands, including Corfu, Evia and Rhodes. On Tuesday, two pilots working to douse the flames on the island of Evia were killed in a plane crash, the country’s prime minister said. In Algeria, more than 30 people have died, including 10 soldiers in the northern city of Bejaia on the Mediterranean, officials said.

Greece battled to contain wildfires on the island of Rhodes for a seventh day on Tuesday, as hundreds of tourists who had been forced to evacuate in previous days were expected to fly back to their countries. Greece is often hit by wildfires during the summer but climate change has led to more extreme heatwaves across southern Europe, raising concerns that tourists will stay away. Wildfires also raged on the island of Corfu, off the west cost of Greece, and Evia island, near the capital of Athens. Civil protection authorities warned of extreme risk of wildfires in Rhodes and on the island of Crete on Tuesday.

The new fires led the authorities to clear hundreds more people from hotels and homes in Corfu on Sunday night to safer areas on the island and to order evacuations on Evia on Monday. The outbreaks complicated the efforts of emergency services already battling blazes on Rhodes, where Greece’s military has been supporting the response. A military transport aircraft brought in hundreds of cots, sleeping bags and other provisions for displaced tourists and locals on Sunday evening. The village struck by fire on Rhodes on Monday was Asklipieio, in the island’s southeast. On Evia, a fire spread in the south on Monday, prompting the authorities to order the evacuation of a village and another blaze broke out in the middle of the island.
